No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.

The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
