Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
