British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages down to the facility... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
